We were recently asked to check out a reasonably sized decked garden in Teddington. It was in a decent enough state, but it was entirely covered in decking and the client wanted something with a bit more character. Working with blank canvases like these is one of our favourite projects, as you don’t have to see past overgrown clumps of vegetation and heaps of rubbish to start to be inspired. We soon realised that creating a multi-layered garden with a pleasant seating area and pretty plants was the way forward.
So we modified the decking, revealing a section of ground that we could work with and building in a couple of steps at the edge. We used Marshalls Drivesys Basalt to add in a little texture, built some beautiful edging to define the central area, and them carefully added in a circular patch of Trulawn Luxury Lawn to add an injection of green lushness. We suggested using Trulawn as it takes very little looking after and is extremely durable so it’ll stay looking lush for years to come!
Next, we headed to one of our favourite places: Sempervirens Nursery in Twickenham. We picked out some nice plants, trees and shrubs from their collection that we knew would set off the central lawn section to perfection.
This job is a great example of how a limited amount of outside space can be transformed into something packed with personality. And because it’s so low maintenance, the customer can spend maximum time enjoying this new outdoor space, without having to tend to it on a regular basis. Job done. Here’s what the customer had to say:
“Anthony transformed my dark, uninteresting and somewhat depressing space at the back of my house. The entire area of about 7 x 5 meters had been laid out with decking and painted in brown.
Anthony had a vision which he drew and sent along with a quote. Once agreed, he removed half of the decking and leveled the area beneath. He stripped and sanded the remaining decking.
With his fondness for flowing spaces and round edges, Anthony created a perfect circle in the latter part of the space whilst the area closest to the house remained decked. He cut the decking-edge in to a round shape and built two steps leading onto the circle. A border for the circle was laid, cut from black slate stone and the circle filled with artificial lawn of the highest quality. A path matching the lawn bo
rder was laid to give easy access to a new gate. All fences and decking were stained with a white wash.
Anthony suggested a mature palm tree for the far corner and a bamboo and red Acer as focal points on the other side. His knowledge for plants led to an interesting array of various grasses, some lavender, a couple of climbers and a clematis to soften the fencing.
The result of Anthony’s vision is simply stunning. The garden turned out fantastically. It is a real oasis.”
